May is National Pet Month. Veterinarians say it's a perfect time to make sure they have the best start for a healthy life.
"Each bond we have is unique to us," said Dr. Patrick Flynn, President of the Human Animal Bond Association.
Many shelters are filled with furry faces looking for forever homes. A great place to start is online.
"From there you can select dogs based on their size, their age, the length of their hair, the color," said April Huntsman, Senior Director of Animal Welfare at Adopt A Pet.
Then, head down to the shelter or rescue organization.
Health and wellness are important, so it's critical to choose a veterinarian.
Many clinics have been short-staffed since the pandemic so it might be hard to find one accepting new clients.
Any healthcare plan includes parasite control.
"It's icky to talk about but very important," said Flynn.
Luckily, there's an easy way to protect them from fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites, and heartworms.
"Thankfully, we live in a world where we have a once-monthly chewable medication that can protect dogs from all of those parasites I just mentioned," Flynn said.
Be sure to keep your pets up to date on their vaccines, out of hot cars, and on a leash.
